Ethernet & Network Printer Setup

Before you begin

Confirm the printer model, connection method, operating system, and the exact symptom. Keep the printer manual available when possible. Use only controls, covers, and compartments intended for ordinary users.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

  1. Connect the Ethernet cable

Connect the printer directly to a LAN port on the router or network switch.

  2. Confirm network status

Wait for the network indicator and print or view the printer network summary if the model supports it.

  3. Find the printer IP address

Check the printer network menu or router device list. Record the address without changing advanced settings.

  4. Add the network printer

Use operating-system printer settings. If automatic discovery fails, add it using its IP address.

  5. Reserve the address if needed

For a stable office setup, configure a DHCP reservation in the router rather than manually changing network settings on the printer.

Platform-specific guidance

Windows 11

Add the printer from Printers & scanners. Choose “Add manually” only if network discovery does not find it.

macOS

Add the printer from Printers & Scanners. The IP tab can be used when Bonjour discovery is unavailable.

Verify the result

Repeat the original task using a small test document. Confirm that the printer completes the task consistently, not just once. Reconnect other devices only after the primary device works.

When to stop

Stop if the printer sparks, smells burnt, overheats, has liquid damage, a damaged power cable, grinding noises, or requires major disassembly. Contact a qualified local repair professional or the manufacturer for hardware service.

Frequently asked questions

A wired network connection is often more stable in busy offices or locations with weak wireless signals.
A router-side DHCP reservation is usually easier to maintain than manually assigning an address on the printer.
