ADF

Automatic Document Feeder; moves multiple pages through a scanner without placing each page on the glass.

AirPrint

Apple technology that allows supported devices to print without a separately downloaded driver.

DPI

Dots per inch; a measure associated with print or scan detail.

Duplex

Printing or scanning both sides of a sheet.

Fuser

A heated laser-printer component that bonds toner to paper. It can be hot and is not a normal user-serviceable part.

Inkjet

A printer type that places tiny droplets of liquid ink onto paper.

Laser printer

A printer type that uses toner, an imaging system, and heat to create output.

Print queue

The ordered list of print jobs waiting to be processed.

Print spooler

The Windows service that manages print jobs and queues.

Toner

Fine printing material used by laser printers.

Wi-Fi Direct

A direct wireless connection between a compatible printer and device without joining the main router network.

WPS

A router-assisted connection method supported by some printers and networks.

Yield

An estimated number of pages a supply may produce under stated test conditions; actual results vary.

Nozzle check

An inkjet test pattern used to identify missing or blocked ink channels.

Calibration

A process that adjusts color, density, or registration for consistent output.
